The Client

A large public sector transport company running a plethora of transport services including trains, buses and car sharing schemes. The company was growing fast through several international acquisitions. Given the dynamic nature of the company, expectation for new acquisitions and organisational changes was a reality.

The Challenge

Data of the various subsidiaries was scattered in many different systems with no common technology or process.

Although it was possible to obtain data from a single business unit, due to the number of data sources and the volume of data from these various sources, it was virtually impossible to produce a consolidated report with data from all subsidiaries in reasonable times.

UXLI was brought in to help the company improve the company’s Data Management processes and implement a common and global platform across all subsidiaries, which could be used for company-wide reporting and decision-making.

Other critical requirements were robustness to cope with large data volumes, scalability to cater for new acquisitions, flexibility to allow easy creation of new reports, and performance (or response time).

The Solution

UXLI was involved since the beginning of the project providing strategic advice to the Technology Office for technology assessment and roadmap implementation.

Solution Highlights

Performance was improved in three ways:

The proposed solution involved the use of multiple Cloud-based technologies architected to work seamlessly. Technologies used for the solution included:

  • SnapLogic – for collating end to end travel data from large and disparate datasets -
  • AWS S3 Service – used as a data lake
  • AWS RedShift – backbone for transforming and consolidating data gathered from multiple sources
  • - BIRST – for data warehousing and smart interactive dashboards
  • Adaptive Insights – for financial planning and actual vs plan reporting
  • UXLI was also the chosen partner for the implementation of all these technologies and we were responsible for project management, design, build, data migration, and supporting the various testing phases.
